Snapshots: Little Fish

Little Fish is one of the hidden gems of 2021. It may seem like a shameless pandemic film, but it’s actually based on a short story from 2011, and was filmed prior to the actual pandemic. If anything, it’s the type of pandemic movie that we need more of – instead of cashing in on unnecessary Covid-19 tie-ins, it simply tells a dramatic, heartfelt story, set against the backdrop of a pandemic. A pandemic of Alzheimer’s…

Little Fish is so compelling, even terrifying at times, because it imagines a society where Alzheimer’s impacts everyone, even healthy young adults. The world-building is frighteningly believable, and the slow, staggering collapse of a society where people lose their memories is psychologically overwhelming. It’s a tough watch for sure, but it’s the sort of movie that will expand your capacity for empathy – give it a chance, even if it feels like just another pandemic movie at first.
